Technical Requirements

Below is a minimum specification for applications required to successfully view these materials fully. In most cases, the applications and plug-ins are already installed on your PC or Apple Macintosh. However, please note that if you are using these materials in your work environment, permission should be sought before proceeding to download any of the following software which is not already installed.

This resource has the following requirements:

  • These materials will be viewable on any Windows Operating System, and the recent versions of the Mac OS including OSX.

  • An internet browser (preferably Internet Explorer 4 and upwards or Netscape/Mozilla 4 and upwards) - Click here to download the latest version of Internet Explorer (NB: Please note that file size can be large).

How to Use this Resource

These online materials have been designed to be easy to navigate and to encourage interactivity with the learner to maximise information retention and enjoyment .

  • The Icon Bar

The navigation menu on the top right will direct you to the following sections:

HOME
SITEMAP
LINKS
WANT TO KNOW MORE?
HELP
CREDITS

Once you are familiar with these icons, you are ready to start navigating the learning content.

  • The Side Menu

The left hand side navigation menu lists the seven sections contained in these materials. When you enter the materials via the main home page, you will always by default be taken to the Introduction page. However, you can jump to other sections by using your mouse cursor to select any section by clicking on it. Alternatively use the SITEMAP button. We recommend where possible, working methodically through the courseware by starting at Section One and using the NEXT page button at the bottom of every page.

  • Interactive Movies

Some of the questions have been developed as an "interactive movie". As you would at home on your DVD/Video player, please remember to press the PLAY button to view. Thereafter, you will be instructed step by step at each stage and you can repeat them as many times as you want by pressing REWIND. If you experience any problems, refer to the HELP section.

  • Questions and Feedback

The resource has been designed to provide instant feedback as to whether the answer you have given is right or wrong. When you have completed a question your answers are not stored. Therefore, we recommend you attempt the question until you are satisfied you completely understand.

  • Printing

Print buttons appear at the bottom of each page, if there is a page you would like in particular in paper form.

Troubleshooting

We endeavour to develop interactive courseware suitable for delivery on multiple platforms/browsers. We have detailed above the minimum technical specifications of software for optimal performance. However, due to the variety of machines, operating systems, hardware etc, some problems may be encountered. We have listed some anticipated problems below:

Printing - if for any reason you experience problems printing directly from the course interface, you can choose to print from the Browser's print button under File on the menu bar. This facility is required when using an Apple Macintosh.

Dynamic generation of pre-answered questions - some of the questions have been programmed to dynamically generate input information further on within the courseware. As stated in technical requirements javascript and cookies must be enabled. If this information is not displaying go to the menu Tools select Internet Options and then choose to enable javascript and cookies from the dropdown.

Interactive multi-media questions - most modern operating systems have a Macromedia Flash plug-in installed. However, if there is no plug-in, a blank space will appear where the movie should be. Please either install the Macromedia Flash 5 plug-in above in Technical Requirements or contact your IT administrator.

Viewing problems - the size of the font can be easily adjusted to suit personal requirements. In Internet Explorer, go to View in the Menu Bar and choose Text Size and select accordingly. To view the course in full screen mode, press the F11 key on your keyboard. This will hide the various browser toolbars.

For all other problems encountered, please refer to the SUPPORT section below.
